Stay Afloat and Try to Stay Cool

This Sunday, August 5, the junior high youth went to Crystal Lake park for a picnic, games, and paddle boating. It was supposed to rain, but ended up being a sunny, hot afternoon - perfect for boating and splashing in the water. We read the story of Jesus walking on the water and talked about how Jesus can comfort us when we have storms in our lives. As one youth so eloquently put it, "Keep your eyes on Jesus or you'll sink!"

Update #2 from Orlando

Good morning!!!

It seems as if everyone is getting their second wind. Something crazy seems to happen in the guys room everynight. Apparently we have some sleepwalkers. We have had everything from incoherent conversations to a huge python snake under the bed causing much distress (Mike and Andrew are very afraid of snakes). The nights have been more exhausting than the day, but it does finally seem to be settling down.

On Monday the youth explored their relationship with Christ, how God CHOSE each one them and what that means. After examining that vertical relationship, Tuesday was spent on horizontal relationships in our Christian lives. The youth looked at issues in how we relate to other Christians, their peers (churched and unchurched) and every other person they will ever come in contact with. We need to know our faith and be prepared to witness it to others. We never know when God will present opportunities for us to be used as His tool to show others the love that Christ has for every single person and the salvation that can only come through Him.

The Gathering Worship Service was Tuesday night. Once again, to see 30,000 of our LCMS youth in one room, worshiping and communing together is an awesome experience. The sermon focused on how God has used "nobodies" to do great things. Moses was a "nobody", Israel was a "nobody" of a nation, and Mary was a "nobody", and these "nobodies" were CHOSEN by God. Now, none of us are "nobody". The fact the God has loved us so much, that Jesus poured out His grace on us through the cross, He has CHOSEN each one of us, and that makes us "somebody." Each one of us is a priceless treasure in God's eyes.

The Holy Spirit will work many of messages our youth have heard into their lives. It may not be tomorrow, or even next year, but the Gospel has poured out during this week and I have no doubt that it will work in the hearts of our children. Please keep us in your prayers.

From Orlando,

Mike
